A while back I impulsively bought Melrose. I love all of her pieces, her face, her hair style but the one thing that always kept me at a distance was her hair color. Unlike her stock photos and stock art, the blond used is very yellow and decently saturated. You can see this in other user’s photos as well. I personally don’t like it since I feel like it doesn’t mesh nicely with her design.
I always had the thought of toning the yellow in her hair to get to a more platinum blond/silver color. Yesterday, I took the plunge. (also please don’t mind the mess lol)
She’s pretty much how I originally got her, minus slightly brushing out her bangs. There’s a pair of elastic bands on top of her bun to keep it in place. Her bun is constructed by taking two halves of her hair, twisting it and wrapping it around itself. It’s hard to tell from her stock art/photos but she does have two tones to her hair, yellow and white (remember this part for later lol). I basically just took the bun out and brushed out the two hair sections. I think she’s also super cute with her hair down!
How I toned her hair was with purple shampoo. I washed it a few times with it in cold water then had a few times where I would just leave it in her hair. I think I had three different times where I just left it in her hair for about an hour. Between those hours, I would use it to wash her hair again and to also see if I wanted the hair to be that color. If not, letting the purple shampoo sit again.
Now my downfall. One of the first times I left the purple shampoo sit included that white section of hair. I didn’t think far enough but it does have a purplish tint to it. Luckily after that, I didn’t have that section sit in the shampoo but I do regret doing that. It does help with making it resemble silver but that isn’t much when it’s half of the hair and when it wasn’t even the part of the hair I was bothered by lol.
I could’ve gone with leaving the hair in the purple shampoo once more but I decided to stop here. The bright yellow has now been muted. Not sure if it’s captured well on camera but there is a slight green tint to that part of her hair. Since the white section of her hair got tinted by the shampoo, her hair doesn’t really look nice color wise I’d say. I do feel better about these colors than her original hair color.
(sadly I don’t have any styling products to here’s my poor attempt at her bun lol)
I might give it another try with adjusting her hair color, this time dying it either a black color or a dark brown.
Your really did a good job, it looks so pretty !
Fun! Thanks for sharing your hair journey with us. I haven’t been brave enough to tone/dye any of my dolls hair yet, but I just got Rainbow High Meena, and I really want to dye her brown. I should follow your example and be brave!
