Helo, apa khabar (Hello, how are you)? I come from Malaysia, the land of wild orchids, warm tropical weather and friendly faces! My country lies just north of the equator in Southeast Asia. Malaysia is made up of three main groups of people: Malays, Chinese, and Indians. The official language is Malay, although all the children learn English in school. Wouldn’t it be fun to live in a house built on stilts? Many families in my country live in homes high above the ground to protect them from flooding during the heavy rains the monsoons bring. Most Malaysians eat without silverware. In fact, we only use our right hands for eating. We love fish, curried chicken, and lots of rice! For dessert, we eat fresh pineapple, papaya and coconut. When you come to Malaysia, be careful not to stand under a coconut tree… a coconut might fall and bop you on the head! Malaysia has lots of monkeys running wild in the parks. Some children even keep monkeys as pets. I know of one monkey who’s trained to climb trees and shake down the loose coconuts! Batik is a traditional Malaysian handicraft where wax and colorful dyes are used to create pretty designs on cloth. My skirt is an example of a beautiful cloth we make called songket. Woven with gold and silver threads, songket is worn for weddings and special occasions. Malaysians love fun and games. Sepak takraw is our favorite sport. The players use only their feet and heads to volley a rattan ball over a volleyball net. We also love to spin tops, fly kites, and play soccer and badminton. Because the weather is always warm, Malaysian children play outside all year ’round. They play a game called chongkak, using a long board with holes for holding stone playing pieces. I hope you will come to Malaysia one day soon and see all the magical sights there are to see! Until then, selamat tinggal (goodbye)!
