Princess of China
(Back of the Box)
Long ago in a corner of Asia, a mighty empire ruled for almost three hundred years. Orderly and wealthy, The Qing Dynasty was the strongest and most glorious, but the last, of all the dynasties that ruled China from Peking (now called Beijing). Here is a beautiful Asian woman, with silky black hair and dark eyes, the daughter of the emperor, the absolute ruler believed to be the Son of Heaven. She lives in the Forbidden City, a magnificent gated maze of halls and palaces protected by a great red wall. Inside, many things are yellow, the symbol of the royal family. The roofs are made of yellow glazed tiles. Decorations in the palace are yellow. Beauty is everywhere. There are gold pagodas (small, ornate buildings), decorations of ivory and jade, and paintings of dragons, the royal symbol of wealth, wisdom, and power. The city is vibrant with creative people. There are astronomers and philosophers, printmakers and merchants. Artists are very important and admired. They create calligraphy (the art of fine handwriting), paintings, and delicate porcelain of pure white, painted with pretty floral designs called famille verte, in green shades, or famille rose, in rosy shades. A favorite pastime of the common people and the lovely princess is Jing-ju, or Peking opera. With great joy, she watches the stage as the performers use music, mime, and brilliant costumes to tell fantastic stories. Their faces are painted to portray supernatural beings, spirits, or other wonderful characters. Princess of China Barbie doll is as beautiful as her exotic country. She wears a traditional gown of the Qing era. The silky, pink material has a lotus design, a symbol of purity. Pink flowers decorate her dark black hair which his combed up in a traditional Chinese style. Befitting her royal rank, the golden crown is inspired by one owned by the wife of the last emperor, Hsuan T’ung.
