Indian Barbie

(Back of the Box)

My country has the highest mountains in the world, and jungles where tigers, elephants and monkeys live. The elephants are trained to move logs or carry people in parades. A beautiful bird, the peacock, is the national emblem. In India, most people live in villages. Their houses don’t have running water, so they go to the village well for water. Women carry the water home on their heads in big round pots. Indians eat rice or chapatties that look like pancakes, and a spice called curry that tastes hot. They eat with their fingers, not silverware. Most Indians observe the Hindu religion. Hindus believe that cattle are sacred animals, and rivers are holy places. The most holy river is the Ganges. Married Hindu women paint a colored dot on their foreheads. Some Indians are Moslems or Christians. Women wear saris instead of dresses. A sari goes around the waist over one shoulder like the one I’m wearing. The Taj Mahal is our most beautiful building. One of our kings built it long ago. In many schools there are no chairs or desks. Boys and girls sit on the floor. They study Hindi, the language you see here.
