1959 Ponytail Barbie #2 is one of the first two Barbies ever released. She was designed by Ruth Handler and named after Ruth’s daughter, Barbara Handler, out of a desirer for her daughter to have dolls that promoted more than simply being a mother and a wife (like baby dolls did) – more like a 3D representation of the paper dolls Barbara played with. Her design was inspired by and very closely mimics a German doll named Bild Lilli.
#2 Ponytail Barbie has a snatched waist under her black and white strapless swimsuit, originally designed this way so that she wouldn’t be bulky when wearing layers of clothes. She has straight legs that don’t bend, the basic five points of articulation (head turns side to side, shoulders lift up and legs move backward and forward), fluffy hair in blonde, brunette or titian red including curled poodle bangs and a high ponytail and her default outfit is the black and white striped swimsuit, black heels and a pair of cat eye sunglasses.
