In a wondrous era long ago, a beautiful maiden — the daughter of the king and queen — lives in a grand castle. This lovely afternoon, the breezes blow softly through London. The young girl walks in the royal garden, something she loves to do every day. Her long blonde hair hangs free (she will wear it loose until she is married). The princess admires the lovely flowers and, as members of the court pass, the princess greets them happily with “Good morrow!” Welcome to Tudor England. Now, there is a Renaissance in music, poetry, and literature. Theatre is very popular; plays by William Shakespeare are performed in the afternoon (there are no electric lights!). The princess would never be allowed to go to the theatre, but she doesn’t care beacuse the players often come to perform at the palace. This charming princess has many pastimes that she enjoys. She likes to play cards, tables (backgammon), and draughts (checkers). Many musicians live and play at the royal court. Some play the lute (a stringed instrument similar to a small guitar) or the virginal (predecessor to the piano, similar to a harpsichord). Others sing beautiful songs called madrigals. Perhaps today there will be a concert in the great hall! Most of all, the princess loves to dance. Her very favorite form is called the galliard. The lively music begins and she glides gracefully. She takes five quicks steps and then leaps, beating her feet together mid-air. There is always something fun to do at the castle in Tudor England.
