CONTENT WARNING

This doll was called “Colored Francie” when it was first released. The term “Colored” is considered racist and offensive towards black people. We have opted to call her “African American” instead to be more respectful. The term “Colored” may still be seen on packaging and advertisements from the time, but Dollect does not condone the use of the word. Please be mindful while reading this page.

Twist N’ Turn Francie (African American)

Three Twist n’ Turn Francies were made in 1967. They came in Brunette, Blonde, and African American. This is notable for being the first black doll from the Barbie line.

There are two variants of this doll. Early releases of the doll have redder hair (possibly due to oxidation) and light brown eyes. Later versions of the doll had darker brown hair and eyes.

Francie came in a one-piece bathing suit, designed to look like a two-piece bathing suit with a white sheer over shirt.
