Once long ago, prince named Siegfried was hunting near a lake, and saw a magical white swan turn into the most beautiful woman in the world. She told him her name was Odette and that she was under the spell of an evil sorcerer. She must remain a Swan Queen, except between midnight and dawn- unless a man loved and married her and never loved another. The prince swore his eternal love and asked her to come to the royal ball where he would choose her as his wife. At the ball, the sorcerer made his evil daughter look just like Odette and tricked the prince into loving another. In the end, however, the sorcerer’s power was destroyed by Odette’s and Siegfried’s triumphant love.

Although a flop when first presented in Moscow in 1877, Swan Lake was a huge success in 1895 when it was re-presented with new choreography and scenery.
