This doll was released as one of two exclusive collector dolls to commemorate the grand opening of the Barbie Flagship store in Shanghai, China in 2009- though on the box it is dated as 2008. This was a new Barbie character created solely for the new Shanghai market, with her name on the box being May Chung- but being referred to as “Ling” in promotional material. Her style is curated to reflect the Shanghainese sensibilities and trends of the time, with a pretty pink satin blouse and a layered gold necklace with a heart pendant. She is also included with: her dog, shopping bags, a passport, assorted accessories, and an additional outfit on a mannequin.

Notes:
“The world’s first House of Barbie opened Friday in Shanghai. There is no mass-market Chinese doll, but Mattel created a special Barbie with what the company calls “a pan-asian likeness” for the opening. One thing is certainly correct: Shanghai women are famed for their shopping abilities.” -Lousia Lim for NPR
