This is one of the two face-ups used in the prototype phase for Then & Now Barbie. She was initially intended to launch with a brand new head mold but this along with both of it’s face-ups were scrapped for unknown reasons. This mold has been sometimes referred to as the chic mold. This first face also features minor makeup differences from the released doll like eyeshadow that is mainly a soft champagne with accents of baby pink around the edges and a fuller & deeper glossy mauve lip in a singular tone rather than being lined. This screening also featured a rounder & slightly wider eye shape.

She was initially intended to launch with a brand new head mold but this along with both of it’s face-ups were scrapped for unknown reasons. This mold has been sometimes referred to as the chic mold. This second face also features minor makeup differences from the released doll like where the eyeshadow is a very soft allover shimmery baby pink, slightly darker brown brows and a satin pale lavender rose lip with a mid-tone rose lip liner. This prototype also features a smaller denser bang with tighter swirl reminiscent of victory rolls of the 1940s.
This in box prototype features the same head mold as the previous two and illustrates how far along in production this mold got with product testing before being scrapped.
The artwork for this line was done by Geri Livingston. She illustrated much of the artwork for this era of Barbie. You can see she has a very vibrant & playful style to the way she illustrates Barbie here as she’s listening to music & simply loving life. The art is tagged with one of the dolls alternation names which included the phrasing ‘Souvenir Barbie’.
The popular Bathing Suit Barbie doll of 1959 was re-created with a modern twist! Barbie doll wears her classic ponytail and striped swimsuit in a modern two-piece style & strappy black mules, and includes a pink & black & white striped tube dress with a ruffle hem, pink tote, “cell phone”, mp3 player & headphones, sunscreen, water bottle, magazine, jewelry and sunglasses as must-have accessories! There’s also a Barbie pink doll brush & retro style tag on the dolls leg just like her classic counterparts!! This deluxe set was a Target exclusive.
Her tote was notably beige in the stock photo & earlier prototype stage of the deluxe set.
