Barbie Butterfly Art Playline
The 1998 Butterfly Art line was a playline release of dolls, 4 fashion packs, and a sports car. The dolls and fashion packs come with a sheet of temporary tattoos that could be used on the doll’s body or your own skin!
This play feature became a point of contention because each of the dolls came with a tattoo already printed onto their body, giving the impression of a “tattooed” Barbie; which greatly upset parents. There was such an uproar about the supposed immorality and bad role model that Barbie had become, that the dolls ended up reportedly being banned and pulled from shelves in the U.S., though this is debated and depends on the region discussed.
The line featured dolls of Barbie, Kira, Teresa, Christie, Ken, and Steven. Barbie’s doll was the only one to get a re-release in a slim box after changes to the design were made due to all the criticism.
6 dolls were released in 1998.
