Introduction
Magic Knight Rayearth is a magical girl mecha anime and manga series about three girls who get whisked away to another world after visting Tokyo Tower on a school trip. There, they become Magic Knights and are tasked with rescuing the world’s princess from the clutches of High Priest Zagato. The original manga was created by CLAMP in 1993 and ran for six volumes. An anime adaptation aired in 1994 for a total of 49 episodes. It later received a three part OVA retelling in 1997. An upcoming anime reboot was announced in 2024.
As a Doll Franchise
The main doll line was released by SEGA in 1994 alongside the anime’s original TV airing. The line was separated into two release types. The first consisted of four dolls; Hikaru, Umi, and Fuu, all in their basic outfits and uniforms, as well as the only doll produced for Primera. The second, known as the DX line, featured the three girls dressed in their full Magic Knight armors. A total of seven different dolls were released alongside nine different fashion packs. Additionally, in 1998, three dolls of the girls were produced under SEGA’s CharaDoll Selection line. These dolls used the same exact sculpts and outfit pieces as their 1994 basics and were effectively rereleases.
Outside Japan, the merchandise license was given to Sonokong in South Korea who, in 1997, proceeded to release three doll basics of the girls as well as one doll based on Hikaru (localized as Sunny) in her Magic Knight dress.

Basic Line
Each doll is 11” tall. The main three girls came with a sword and two character cards. Primera came with only one card.
DX Line
The DX line depicts the girls in their main Magic Knight armor. While the armors could be bought separately through the fashion packs, this offered a way to obtain them together with a doll. Alongside their cards, swords, and armor accessories, each doll also came with a figurine of series mascot character, Mokona.
Fashion Packs
Same with the dolls, each armor accessory pack came with a collectible character card based on the designated wearer. The Magic Knight dresses did not come with any additional items.
In 1998, three Magic Knight Rayearth dolls were released under SEGA’s CharaDoll Selection line. While no longer under their own standalone line, these dolls were more or less rereleases as they used the same exact sculpts and outfit pieces as their earlier first wave basic dolls.
