Medicom Toy produced a short lived line of collectible art figures from 1998-1999 simply titled, the Collectible Doll series, a precursor to the company’s current ongoing Vinyl Collectible Dolls. In contrast to the current line which is mostly made up of static figures, this first series had fabric clothing pieces for the majority of releases. It was also known for its huge focus on the work of artist, Rodney Alan Greenblat, particularly for its series of Parappa the Rapper and Um Jammer Lammy dolls. A total of 10 toys were created.
The line launched in the latter half of 1998 with two dolls in the Parappa the Rapper series. The two were advertised to have underwear specially designed by Rodney Greenblat himself.
Also released in 1998 was a two-pack of the main characters of the underground manga, Nekogami-sama by Nekojiru. Interestingly, these are the only toys in the entire series that were not based on Greenblat’s art.
The final series in the line was also released in 1999 and was a collaboration between both the pop rock band, PUFFY AmiYumi, and Greenblat’s picture book series, Thunder Bunny. The duo had a friendly professional relationship with Greenblat which led to Ami Onuki discovering his work on the Thunder Bunny books. She quickly fell in love with the character and pushed for its Japanese translation and publication. The IP became heavily associated with the band, and Greenblat continued to work with the two of them to produce numerous artwork related to both them and the character. Medicom’s toy series consisted of a 200mm (7.8”) mini statue of Thunder Bunny as well as a two-pack doll set of Ami and Yumi, designed in Greenblat’s style. The Ami and Yumi dolls came with matching guitars, fabric bandannas, and backstage passes.
