Mooshka is a toy line introduced in the fall of 2013. The line was created by American company MGA Entertainment in partnership with German toy company Zapf Creation, with versions of the dolls sold internationally with Zapf branding. (MGA had acquired a 19.2% stake in Zapf in 2006 while entering a long-term joint sales venture; the former would initiate a merger with the latter in October 2023).
The backstory for the dolls goes as follows: “The Mooshka dolls were once individual paper dolls, but one day, through the power of friendship, they joined hands and sprang into sweet, huggable girls who discover that all kinds of special and wonderful things happen once you connect with your friends! Now, the Mooshka dolls hold hands with each other to show how friendship connects us all.”
The first launch included three lines of plush dolls: the standard 13-inch Girls, the 9.5-inch Tots and the 15-inch Sing Around the Rosie dolls which included a singing mechanism. While the majority of Mooshka releases were plush dolls, 2014 would see the line expand into miniature plastic figures, as well as wooden playsets and accessories. A total of 28 characters, plus four animal Friends, would be produced from 2013 to the final releases in early 2015.
