Now you can perform an experiment at home with Project Mc2 leader, McKeyla McAlister. Make your own invisible ink pen just using household ingredients like baking soda and water. Your ink may seem invisible when you’re writing your secret message, but the pen is actually leaving a residue of sodium bicarbonate (aka baking soda). When you rub your paper with a berry or tea bag, the acid in those items creates a chemical reaction with the baking soda, a base. That reaction makes your message become visible.

Wanna learn how to do McKeyla’s Invisible Ink experiment? We’ve got all the details you need:

What you’ll need for this experiment:

  • Invisible ink pen and cap from McKeyla’s Invisible Ink set
  • Baking soda
  • Tea bag (black tea or berry flavoured) or berries
  • Warm water
  • Cup
  • Measuring spoons
  • Paper

Let’s begin!

  1. In a cup, combine two teaspoons of baking soda and one tablespoon of water. Stir the mixture thoroughly.
  2. Remove the cap from the pen and twist off the pen tip. Pour the baking soda mixture into the pen. Tightly replace the pen cap.
  3. Write a message on a piece of paper and let it dry completely. Once it is dry, dip a tea bag into warm water and wring it out. Rub the tea bag over your message to reveal what you wrote!
