Project Mc2 is a team of four super-smart and seriously cool girls who use their love of science and their spy skills as they go on missions for secret organization, NOV8 (that’s “innovate”!). And now there are two new recruits! They’re real girls with real skills ready to take on anything. Watch new episodes of the Project Mc2 original series, only on Netflix! Now you can perform an experiment at home with artist extraordinaire and newest member of Project Mc2, Devon D’Marco. Make your own puffy paint using safe household ingredients like flour, salt, powdered drink mix, and food colouring.
Mix Art with S.T.E.M. to make S.T.E.A.M. Each ingredient in the puffy paint plays a special role. The flour makes the paint thicker so it doesn’t leak out of the tube. The salt forms crystals when the paint dries making it appear sparkly, and the drink mix and food colouring provide the colour. After we apply the paint, a process called evaporation removes the water, leaving a lot of flour and salt behind, making it appear puffy.

Wanna learn how to do Devon’s Puffy Paint experiment? We’ve got all the details you need:
What you’ll need for this experiment:
- Paint tubes, nozzles and caps from Devon’s Puffy Paint set
- Water
- Powdered Flavored Drink Mix (ie Kool-Aid)
- Flour
- Salt
- Plastic Bag or Funnel
- Two Mixing Bowls
- 1/3 Measuring Cup
Let’s begin!
- In a mixing bowl, combine powdered flavoured drink mix and 1/3 cup of water.
- In another bowl, combine 1/3 cup of salt and 1/3 cup of flour.
- Add the liquid mixture to the dry mixture and thoroughly combine until it is well blended.
- NOTE: the desired consistency should be liquid enough to squeeze out of the tube, but solid enough to be puffy. Experiment and adjust accordingly.
- Unscrew the nozzle and cap from the paint tube. Ask and adult to cut off one corner tip of a plastic bag and place it in the opening of the tube.
- Pour the mixture into the bag and squeeze it into the tube. Replace the nozzle and remove the nozzle cap. Now you are ready to paint!
Important information:
- Do not allow puff paint to come into contact with eyes
- Only use puff paint on surfaces approved by an adult. Do not use on furniture, pets, carpet, etc.
- Puff paint may not be fully removed from clothing. Protect any clothing you do not want to paint.
- Wash hands after use.
- Do not store product overnight. Discard excess product immediately after use.
- Rinse out the paint container and nozzle thoroughly with soap and water after use. Place container and nozzle on a clean towel to air dry.
- If paint is stuck in the nozzle, use a toothpick to clean it out.
