You may have noticed that #Licca MyFavCosme, which came out this year, is a somewhat revamped version of #Licca CosmeLover, which came out in 2020. Seeing how the older doll is still available on Amazon.co.jp, provided you do some slight digging, you may be interested in the differences and similarities between these two dolls. Some of the differences are clear just by looking at the stock photos: for example, MyFavCosme has a more colorful top that kind of looks like she’s promoting her channel or brand, while CosmeLover has a slightly more muted and casual look. However, other differences are not as clear or simply cannot show up in the stock photos. Now, I only have MyFavCosme, but I have looked at reviews of CosmeLover and I think I am ready to compare the two for you! See which one you like better!
This YouTube video compares the two dolls and is one of the sources that I’m going to be using here. Also, for clarity’s sake, I’m going to refer to CosmeLover as “the older” or “the 2020 doll”, and to MyFavCosme as “the newer” or “the 2023 doll”.
The packaging
Unlike the 2020 doll, the 2023 doll’s box does not feature a velcroed window that you can open to look at the doll before you buy it. The new box is completely solid cardboard, with no see-through parts. This is a bit of a letdown, as it means that, even if you’re shopping at a physical store, you don’t get to have a look at the 2023 doll before you decide to buy it. You only have her stock photo to go by!
The dolls
The dolls are identical: they have the same head mold, face-up and makeup. HOWEVER! As seen in xCanadensis’ video, the 2020 doll comes with A LOT of styling product on her bangs, making them look effectively like a row of triangles. The 2023 doll, on the other hand, has next to no product on her bangs and they look just like in the stock photo, very smooth, even, and soft. Of course, the 2020 doll is easily fixed by removing the styling product, and then you can achieve an identical look for the bangs of the two dolls, as shown in the first video I linked.
The outfits
The 2020 doll has a white top, shoulderless but long-sleeved, with the writing “#seventeen #BABY”. The 2023 doll also has a shoulderless top, but hers is short-sleeved and more colorful, featuring pink trim and a design that says “#Myfav Cosme” in purple, with a yellow shade and hearts and a pink lipstick around it. I think she kind of looks like an influencer promoting her brand or her channel!
The 2020 doll has a plaid pink miniskirt with light green stripes. On the front, the skirt has three very shiny studs. Her skirt has dark pink interlaced ribbons on both sides.
The 2023 doll also has a pink plaid skirt, but the stripes are a very pastel aqua color this time, and the design of the skirt is flared towards the bottom. Compared to the 2023 doll, the three studs on the front are smooth and flat, with a non-shiny matte finish, and are spaced more closely together. The ribbons on the sides of her skirt are a somewhat brighter shade of pink, closer to the magenta spectrum.
The 2020 doll has very short, bright yellow socks, while the 2023 doll has longer socks with a very sturdy elastic band that allows you to lower them and achieve the typical Asian “loose socks” look. Or you can choose to stretch them all the way! The elastic band is good quality and versatile and both looks look great.
Their shoes are identical black sports sandals.
The accessories
This is the very interesting part, as I would say the major differences between the two dolls are found in this department.
First of all, the 2020 doll comes with a cardboard makeup-themed background that you can have her stand against. The 2023 doll does not come with any background.
Both dolls come with identical yellow stud earrings and a heart-shaped ring. However, the 2020’s ring is a more purple shade of pink, while the 2023 doll’s ring is more magenta. Their colors of their rings somewhat match the ribbons on their skirts. Another big difference here is that the 2020 doll comes with her earrings and ring already on her out of box, while the 2023 doll’s ring and earrings are inside a plastic bag with the rest of her accessories and you will have to take them out and put them on her.
Their bags are very similar in design: they are solid clear plastic rectangular compacts. However, the 2020 doll’s bag has beautiful golden specks embedded in the plastic. The bag cord is made of metallic-looking beads. The 2023 doll’s bag is clear plastic that says #Licca on one side, in the doll line’s signature colors. Here, the bag cord takes center stage — it is much prettier than the original and made of clear, iridescent beads.
Both dolls come with LOTS of extra accessories, but the 2020 doll comes with a lot more accessories than the 2023 doll. I will try to list them all!
CosmeLover (2020) comes with: a lipstick box with six lipsticks inside; two lip glosses; a solid red lips-shaped case for the lip glosses; a powder compact that opens and closes; an eyeshadow compact that opens and closes; two different makeup brushes; two bottles of perfume; three bottles of nail polish; two more differently-shaped bottles of cosmetics. The lids of the perfume and nail polish bottles are separate pieces and can come off.
MyFavCosme (2023) comes with: a lipstick box with six lipsticks inside; two lip glosses; a clear red lips-shaped case for the lip glosses; a powder compact that opens and closes; an eyeshadow compact that opens and closes; a sheet of stickers in the Japanese “print club” (purikura) style.
I trust you can see a few differences between these two lists! The 2020 doll’s accessories come inside a plastic blister that you can keep to make sure that none of the many tiny pieces are missing. The 2023 doll’s accessories just come inside a clear plastic bag.
When you look at just the accessories, it really sounds like the 2020 doll offers a lot more value, right? Well, that’s because I have yet to talk about–
The stands
The 2023 doll comes with a MASSIVE revamp of the stands that the #Licca dolls come with, and I PRAY that things stay that way for this line. Compared to every single flimsy and next-to-useless #Licca stand that has come before it, the base is sturdier and more stable, and the clamp is designed to snap around the doll’s leg (with a very satisfying sound, I might add) and hold it in place firmly so you can pose her however you want. No more posing your #Licca in super awkward poses and praying to supernatural powers that she doesn’t fall over! In sum, the 2023 doll’s stand isn’t just much better quality than the 2020 doll’s stand — it’s much better quality than all the #Licca stands that came before it.
I think I have explained all the differences between the two dolls! I personally still prefer My Fav Cosme, the 2023 doll with a flashier look. I like to believe she’s a Youtuber making videos about makeup and beauty. And I just can’t get enough of the stand clamp snapping onto her leg and letting me pose her freely! Let me know in the comments if you think I missed something, and also let me know which doll is your favorite!
