Addy Walker, 1864

Addy is a young girl living through the American Civil War. She was born enslaved, but escapes to the North with her mother. She was the fifth Historical Character, introduced by American Girl in 1993.

She represents the Civil War era and African American slavery. She was conceptualized by a panel of experts in African American history and civics. She was the first American Girl of color, and until Cecile Rey was introduced in 2011, she was the only African American American Girl. She was also the first American Girl doll to have earrings.

Addy loves her family more than anything, and is deeply saddened by their seperation, both when her father and brother were sold and when she had to leave her baby sister when she and her mother escaped to the North. She is kind, brave, and clever. Addy showed a lot of bravery and resilience during her escape from enslavement and in her new start in Philidelphia. She is a bright learner and even teaches her mother to read with cookie dough.

Her collection was revitalised in 2014 with the launch of Beforever. Many of her previously retired collection pieces have been rereleased in the 2020s.
