Introduction
American Girl dolls are a line of 18-inch dolls created by Pleasant Rowland in 1986. They were initially created to teach kids about history, though the brand has expanded since its founding.
Pleasant Company produced the dolls until 1998 when the brand was sold to Mattel.
“We give girls chocolate cake with vitamins. Our books are exciting, our magazine is fun, and the dolls and accessories are pretty. But more important, they give young girls a sense of self and an understanding of where they came from and who they are today.”
–Pleasant T. Rowland, founder
