Hola! (hello) from Peru. My country is the third largest in South America. Can you find it on the map? It has a desert on the coast, highlands with the Andes Mountains, and jungles to the East. Most of our big cities, like Lima, the capital, are on the desert coast. Lima has beautiful Spanish plazas, carved balconies, churches, parks and the oldest university in the Americas. It hardly ever rains in Lima, but underground canals and a cold ocean current keep Lima cool and green. Our most popular sport is soccer, and Peruvian teams compete all over the world. Basketball, baseball and bullfighting are popular, too. Half our population is pure Indian. We are proud of our Indian heritage. Tourists and archaeologists from all ove the world come to see Machu Picchu, the lost city of our Inca ancestors. Indians in the highlands today weave their clothes from alpaca and llama wool just as the Incas did. Ladies wear several layers of skirts to keep warm – blue or green – like mine. Flowers on a hat mean they want a husband. In the jungle, some Indians wear grass skirts and decorate their skin with red dye. The Indian’s companion is the llama, which looks like a furry camel. It is used for wool and milk, and to carry supplies. Its relative, the vicuna, has the softest fleece in the world. I hope you can come and visit my country. Until then, here are a few words in Spanish to practice. Some of us also speak the language of the Inca.
