Ahoj (Hello) from Czechoslovakia, the beautiful land of snow-capped mountains, wooded forests and green farmland as far as the eye can see! My country is located in Eastern Europe, bordered by East and West Germany, Austria, Hungary, Poland and the Soviet Union. Czechoslovakia is made up of two distinct groups of people: the Czechs, who speak Czech; and the Slovaks, who speak Slovak. Czechoslovakia has cold, snowy winters, so we love to ski and play ice hockey. In the summer when the snow melts, my country is sunny and warm. The children love to spend their days outdoors playing their favorite games: hopscotch and soccer (which we call football!). For the past 50 years, Czechoslovakian children have been charmed by the antics of the very famous father and son puppet duo named Spejbl and Hurvinek. The puppet theater travels from town to town and appears on its own radio and television shows. In some country villages, especially in the mountains, people live in traditional timber chalets with tall, pointy rooftops. But in the larger cities, like Prague, most families live in modern apartments. When the weather is warm, we hurry to the open-air markets to buy fresh fruits and vegetables. It’s not easy to find vegetables in the winter, so we preserve the vegetables by “pickling” them. We make a dish called kysele zeli, which is pickled cabbage. For dinner, we like to have roast pork, dumplings and kysele zeli. For dessert we have sweet cakes! At festival time, you can see us in traditional dress, similar to the Slovak costume i have on. We wear brightly-colored skirts with full petticoats, blouses with frilly collars and big sleeves, red tights, lace-up black boots, and scarves or flower wreaths on our heads. Our holidays are great fun! At Christmas, we celebrate with presents, a lavish Czech Carp feast, and a visit from St. Nicholas! On Easter Sunday we have an egg hunt and boys and girls have fun playing games. Please come visit Czechoslovakia very soon. We will greet you with warm smiles and open arms!
