English Barbie

(Back of the Box)

Hello from “Jolly Old England,” a country rich in tradition and pageantry! England is part of a larger country called Great Britain, an island in western Europe that also unites Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. The capital city of England is London, home of Queen Elizabeth II and the British Royal Family. People come from all over the world hoping to catch a glimpse of the Queen at Buckingham Palace! Visitors to England love to watch the ceremony of the Changing of the Guard in front of the palace. For just a few pence (coins), you can ride the tube (underground train) to almost any place you want to go! You can shop at Harrods, a famous London department store, see the sights from a double-decker bus, and see Big Ben, the famous clock tower on the Houses of Parliament. Do fill a motorcar (automobile) with petrol (gasoline), and tour the English countryside! THere are so many stately English homes and castles to see. Don’t miss the home of William Shakespeare in Stratford-on-Avon or the beautiful Lake District where Beatrix Potter wrote her wonderful tales of Peter Rabbit. For just a few pounds (money), you can get a great lunch of fish & chips (fish & fries). At 4:00, you can take afternoon tea just like the Queen. Her Majesty prefers sweets like biscuits (cookies), and scones (tea cakes) with her tea. Most English people who live in the city have flats (apartments). In the country, homes are larger, and many have beautiful gardens. We English take great pride in our gardens and gardening is favorite pastime of the young and old alike! A popular sport is Polo, a form of field hockey on horseback. And who could resist an invitation to the famous horse races at Ascot, where spectators arrive wearing their finest morning coats and fancy hats! The outfit I’m wearing is a sidesaddle riding habit, the height of fashion among English horsewomen in the 1890s. My riding habit is adorned with an ascot tie and jeweled pin, and topped by an English bowler (derby hat). It’s just he look for a jaunty steeplechase (horse race). Although we speak English, some words are a little different than in America. I hope you’ll pop on over to England one day soon! There’s so much to do, you’re sure to have a simply smashing good time! Until then, cheerio! (Good-bye!)
