Greetings from the Republic of Kenya in East Africa. We have high mountains, beautiful beaches, and lush farmlands. Come, we will go on a tour! Our capitol Nairobi is very exciting. Let’s jump on a matatu (local mini-bus) and look around. Notice the many kinds of people; Kenya has over 40 ethnic groups. Our national language is Kiswahili, but English is our official language. Harambee (pull together) is our motto. Most people wear modern dress, but there is a Masai Moran (warrior) in traditional costume! He left his spear at home–they are banned in the city. I am Masai also. My dress is a shuka with a kanga cape. Look! Zebras! Nairobi National Park is right outside the city. Kenya is famous for the wild animals we protect in our National Parks and game preserves. You can take a photo safari (journey), and “capture” a simba (lion) or twiga (giraffe) in a picture! Now we are at a village with houses of thatch and mud. A woman is carrying water in a gourd and that boy’s job is watching the goats. And there is a shamba (farm). Farming provides our food. Uji (corn meal porridge), red bean stew, and maandazi (fried bread) are some favorites. Our tour must end, but there is much more to see and do. We will warmly welcome you to Kenya anytime!
