Native American Barbie

(Back of the Box)

Hello! I’m Native American Barbie, part of a proud Indian heritage, rich in culture and tradition! One of the most well know ceremonies of the Native American culture is the powwow. The powwow was a call to tribe members to gather together to celebrate their unity with the spirit of Nature. This was–and still is today– a way for the community to discuss important community matters, prepare for hardships together, and most important, to celebrate the goodness of life together! Usually, the powwow included athletic events, contests, arts and craft exhibits, a big feast of traditional foods, and of course, tribal dances. Dancing was a fun way to celebrate together, to share with friends and to get to wear beautiful dresses decorated with a variety of colorful beads, majestic feathers, and other gifts from Nature. Girls who participated in powwow dances were required to wear a shawl, usually made out of buckskin and beautifully decorated, too! People were not the only ones to dress up! On special occasions, the horses were decorated with broad bands of cloth covered in beautiful beadwork, hung around the neck of the horse, and a wide rectangular piece of beadwork rested across the horse’s chest. How beautiful everyone must have looked! I’m wearing a traditional outfit, like those worn long ago by Native American women attending a powwow ceremony. My long dress, inspired by the original Native American buckskin dresses, is decorated with a silver-colored belt, long, colorful fringe and a beautifully multi-colored, beaded bodice. Feathers accent my dress and my traditional braided hair. We Native Americans of today still proudly keep alive the ways and wisdom of our ancestors, the first Americans. Good-bye!
