Hello, I’m Native American Barbie, part of a proud American Indian heritage, rich in culture and tradition. Many years ago, Native Americans lived all over the United States. Each of us belonged to a tribe, a group of people who shared ancestors and customs and took pride in the spirit of our individual people. There were many different tribes who became famous for their beautiful artwork, crafts and stories. Today, many Native Americans still live in areas of land called a Reservation. These areas have their own government, schools and even hospitals that have been created to let the rich heritage and cultural traditions remain alive and respected by each new generation. I’m wearing an authentically styled “buckskin” dress highlighted with pretty turquoise colored designs. I have extra-long black hair worn with a feather and soft “buckskin” moccasins on my feet. I am getting ready to go to a special ceremonial event, where all our tribe will be dressed up. All Native Americans believe in tradition as a way of life. During our ceremonial events, we have certain rituals to follow and special foods to eat. Each tribe has its own special choices to make about each celebration. Some of us eat only fruits and vegetables, while other tribes eat only what they can catch off the land. The old people in our tribe are considered the wisest. They carry years of our history in their minds. At night, we gather ’round our elders and listen to stories of our tribe’s past. I am proud to be a Native American today. We proudly keep alive the ways and wisdom of our ancestors, the first Americans. Good-bye!
