The 2000 Kayla/Lea Face Mold debuted in 2001 with the Amazing Nails Kayla and the Amazing Nails Lea dolls. The last Kayla character doll was created in 2007 for the Fashion Fever Sparkle and Shine line, and the last Lea character doll was created in 2014 for the Princess Ballerina line.
The character Kayla who uses this specific face mold is not to be confused with the character Kayla from the pre-2000s lines (such as the 1989 Dance Club Kayla, who uses the 1985 Diva/Midge Face Mold and the 1993 Locket Surprise Kayla, who uses the 1990 Teresa Face Mold).
The sculpt has also depicted the characters Kira and Benetton in the 2006 Fashion Fever line, Princess Blair in the 2006 12 Dancing Princesses Line, Jane in 2011 from the Twilight Eclipse, Tris in 2015 from the movie Divergent, and Special Agent Renee in the 2016 Spy Squad line. The sculpt has appeared on dolls of a variety of skin tones.

Kayla has been depicted as both Asian and Hispanic, and the sculpt has been used for non-character Asian, Black, Hispanic, and white dolls. The sculpt has also been used for many other playline dolls in the 2011 Chinese and 2012 Hawaiian Dolls of the World, Fairytopia, Barbie Careers, You Can Be Anything, Glitz Barbie, Cutie Reveal, and Barbie Fashionistas lines. In 2002 the sculpt was used to depict the five-time Figure Skating World Champion and Olympic Silver Medalist Michelle Kwan, and the award-winning singer Shakira. The sculpt has been used for multiple collector Barbie dolls. These include but are not limited to the 2006 PFDF Rhapsody in Paris doll, 2010 and 2012 Barbie Basics dolls, 2014 The Look Red Carpet doll, 2015 PTMI Love Letter from Japan doll, 2019 Dia de los Muertos doll, 2020 Inspiring Women Susan B. Anthony doll, 2022 Lunar New Year doll, and the 2025 PTMI Birthday doll.
