Ancient Greece is a rocky land with hundreds of islands scattered over the brilliant blue Aegean, Adriatic, and Ionian Seaws. Here flourishes a great civilization that will last over a thousand years. Democracy rules in many city-states, but some places are ruled by a king. In one royal state, the beautiful daughter of the king lives happily. Her palace is divided into the andron, an area for the men, and the gynaikon, an area for the women. The princess loves to spend time in the courtyard where she plays with boardgames and tops. She also likes the game knucklebones, which is like jacks. Because she is a princess, she can read and write. The princess spends a lot of time weaving. In Greece, spinning wool and weaving it into cloth is so important that even noblewomen and queens weave. There are many myths about weaving. The princess loves to hear the famous tale of The Fates over and over again. It tells of three goddesses who control each person’s destiny. Klotho, the spinner, spins out the thread of life. Lachesis, the measurer, measures out how long a life should be. And Atropos, the irreversible, chooses when to cut the thread of life. The princess wears a long and flowing robe called a chiton. It is made of two rectangles fastened by pins or jeweled clips. When it’s cold, she wears a cloak called a himation. It is fashionable for women to look pale and delicate, so the princess wears white powder. Her beauty regime includes rubbing olive oil into her skin to soften and cleanse it. Princess of Ancient Greece Barbie doll pays tribute to this classical age dressed in a rippled, copper-colored chiton. Her golden arm cuff features a serpent design. Because she is a princess, she wears a beautiful golden crown made of “laurel leaves.”
