Princess of Ancient Mexico

(Back of the Box)

From about 1428 until 1521, the strong and powerful Aztec people ruled. Their vast land stretched from the Gulf of Mexico to central Mexico and as far south as Guatemala. A pretty girl with long dark hair and deep brown eyes lives in the royal palace in the capital city of Tenochtitlan. She is the daughter of the huey tlatoani, meaning the great lord or great speaker. He is the supreme leader of the Aztec empire and is believed to be divine. From her window, she sees many buildings and a huge temple. There are so many canals here that Europeans call her city “Venice of the New World.” Like all noble people, her clothes are made of brightly colored cotton. Her decorations are made of gold and feathers. The most prized feathers of all are the iridescent green ones from a bird called the quetzal. There are many things to do in the Aztec land. The girl loves to walk in the lush green countryside where many beautiful animals live, including jaguars, hummingbirds, eagles, and llamas. She often takes along her favorite companion – her pet dog who is very tame and friendly. Sometimes she prefers to stay in the palace. A favorite pastime is playing patolli, a board game similar to backgammon. Often, she watches others play a ball game called ulama. In this game, the court represented the world, and the ball stood for the moon and the sun. This sport is very rough and played by men.
