Princess of the Navajo

A beautiful young girl with long dark hair and sparkling brown eyes lives in the desert of the American southwest. She is a Navajo, or as she would say, Dine, which means “the people.” Her father is the chieftain; the Navajo call him the headman or Naatani. She lives comfortably in a traditional house called a hogan. It is made of logs, tree bark, and mud. The doorway of the hogan faces east so that she can begin each day by greeting the rising sun. She speaks a language called Dinebizaad. As she meets the people on her reservation, she greets them with the greeting, “Ya’ateeh” which means “it is good” or “is everything good with you?” As she speaks, she gives them a gentle, friendly handshake. The Navajo have many wonderful arts and this girl is learning many of them. They are master silversmiths, they create beautiful baskets and intricate sandpaintings. Weaving is very important to the Navajo and their rugs are famous around the world. Today, the chieftain’s daughter visits her giant loom. She is making a rectangular blanket. When she finishes, she will sew two blankets together, leaving openings for the head and arms. This traditional Navajo “rug dress” is called a biil. The girl is very happy because at sundown today, there will be a Blessingway or H zh ji Hane in celebration of the birth of a baby. This wonderful, 2-day ceremony includes singing, chanting, and joy!
