Josefina Montoya, 1824

Josefina is a young girl living near Santa Fe, in modern day New Mexico. She was the sixth Historical Character, introduced by American Girl in 1997.

She represents the New Mexico area under Mexican rule, and rancho life.

Josefina lives on a rancho outside of Santa Fe. She is the youngest of four sisters and the recent loss of her mother weighs heavily on her. She is very shy around new people but playful with her family. She struggles at first to adjust when her Tia Dolores moves in to help fill the void left by her mother, but grows to love her just as much. Josefina is good humored and soft spoken. She loves music, planting flowers, and weaving. Josefina dreams of being a curandera or healer like her grandmother and aunt.

She is the only Historical Character of Latin American descent, and her stories and accessories often use Spanish, which is her native language. Her main books were also translated into Spanish when she was first released.

Her collection was revitalised in 2014 with the launch of Beforever.
