Dutch Barbie
(Back of the Box)
Hello, I’m Dutch Barbie! I’d like to take you on a tour of my beautiful country, the Netherlands, also known as Holland. The Dutch word for Netherlands is Nederlanden, which means lowlands because much of our land is at or below sea level. We have many windmills here. These are used to drain water off the land to keep it from flooding. A system of dams, or dikes, protects the land from the sea so people can live and work on it. In our capital city of Amsterdam, you can see many gardens full of beautiful flowers, especially tulips. We are know worldwide for our many varieties of tulip bulbs and other flowers. My costume is native to the people from the fishing village of Volendam. My blue bodice and striped skirt are accented with an embroidered collar and apron. My white bonnet is called a hulletje. I wear klompen (wooden shoes) that are perfect here because they keep your feet dry, even in the wet weather! Dutch people are famous for making good cheese and delicious chocolates. On special holidays, we often have a rijsttafel (rice table) a feast of many different dishes. If you come to visit us, we could have lots of fun bike riding, ice skating and playing soccer, our national pastime. The people of the Netherlands treat all guests with special care and kindness! See you soon!
