Eskimo Barbie
(Back of the Box)
We live in the beautiful, cold lands of the Arctic, which includes Alaska, northern Canada, Siberia and Greenland. It’s so cold temperatures sometimes drop to 60 degrees below zero. Ice floats on the sea. Trees can’t grow. And we have to dress in warm furs and boots. The Arctic is called the land of the midnight sun because during part of the summer, the sun is always shining, even at night. In winter, Eskimos fish through the ice. In summer, Eskimos hunt on the sea in a kayak, a one-man boat. Snow houses called igloos are built when Eskimos go hunting, but we live in wooden houses. Eskimos live in small groups and believe in sharing. Only the most personal property is considered private. We like to sing and dance. Each dance tells a story, just as Hawaiian hulas do, through hand motions. The only musical instrument used is a drum shaped like a giant ping pong paddle. Dogsleds take us anywhere we want to go. The dogs have wolf-like faces, and thick fur coats. We have our own language with very complicated grammar. Would you like to know a few words?
Kringmerk: Dog, Nanuk: Polar bear, Mukluks: Boots, Chimo: Hello! I’m friendly. Are you friendly?, Ananak: Mother, Iglu: House, Kayak: One-man boat, Nugeuksuk: Girl
