Japanese Barbie

(Back of the Box)

Konnichiwa (hello) from Japan. My country is a group of islands formed by a volcanic rock long ago. Of the 265 volcanoes in Japan, Mt. Fuji is the most famous. To us, it is Fujisan, a sacred mountain. When people greet one another in my country, they bow. It is a sign of politeness and respect. These things are very important to us. We have a great love of beauty and nature. You will see many gardens in Japan. They may include large rocks, pieces of wood, sculpture, even ponds with koi (carp fish). Flower arranging is an art form here. We call it ikebana. Even our language is an art form — It’s written in picturelike characters. Here are the characters for flower. The word for flower is hana. We learn to write it both ways. When we come into the house, we take off our shoes. Our meals are simple and as fresh as possible — rice, fish, vegetables, served with ocha (tea). We eat at a low table, sitting on the floor. We sleep on the floor, too, but on mats with a futon (quiltlike cover). On special occasions, we wear a kimono like I have on. Notice the obi (sash) around my waist. There is a special bow in the back. I would wear my kimono to perform the Chanoyu, or Tea Ceremony, which is an important event to us. I hope someday you will visit the Land of the Rising Sun. Make sure that you go on hanami (flower-viewing trips). The cherry blossoms are beautiful in the spring. Until then, sayonara (goodbye).
