Irish Barbie

(Back of the Box)

I am from Ireland, the beautiful “Emerald Isle” west of England. It is called that because of its lush, green, meadowy hills. We also have many pretty lakes, and the longest river in all the British Isles, the Shannon. Our biggest city is Dublin, the capital. Ireland is famous for its potatoes, but our many farms also grow barley, wheat, oats, turnips and sugar beets. Cattle and dairy products are also important, and we manufacture things like crystal, cars and textiles. Our country’s Irish name is Eire. Ireland is very old, and we are proud of our past. Some of my friends even study Gaelic, our traditional language. But you’ll hear English spoken most of the time. The ancient people, the Celts, left mysterious ruins for us to visit and wonder about. There are also “round towers,” built by monks almost a thousand years ago to protect themselves from Viking raids. Ireland is a modern country now. But we still get together to sing folk songs and enjoy our lively dances, the reel and the jig. We are also proud of our many famous Irish poets and writers. My people are very friendly. The tourists who come to visit from all over the world often return. I hope you come, too.

Here are a few Gaelic words you might have fun learning. Dhia gut: Hello, Madra: Dog, Cat: Cat, Colleen: Girl, Bouchal: Boy, Teach: House, Mathair: Mother, Athair: Father, Scoil: School, Leabhar: Book
