My country is almost surrounded by the deep blue Mediterranean Sea. It’s a beautiful land of mountains, peninsulas and islands in southeast Europe. The highest mountain is Mount Olympus where Greeks of long ago believed the gods lived. There are many stories about the early Greeks. The most famous is the Trojan War, which was won by the Greeks who hid in a huge wooden horse. Ancient Greeks excelled in science, philosophy, and all the arts. Some of their vases and statues are still admired today. In Athens, our capital, you can see the ruins of the Parthenon, a temple built for the goddess Athena. Another famous place is Olympia, where the Olympic Games began. Today, most people live in farm villages. The farms are small and grow cotton, wheat, grapes, olives and lemons. Transportation between towns is difficult because of the mountains, and some parts of Greece can only be reached by donkey. Our flag has a white cross symbolizing our major religion, which is Greek Orthodox. At Greek Orthodox festivals, we enjoy food, wine and dancing. Often, we dance side by side, holding hands. Typical dishes are roasted lamb, dolmathes (stuffed grape leaves) and moussaka (eggplant and ground meat). I know you’ll like my country. We are very friendly and welcome strangers.
