(Back of the Box)

Did you notice how many languages are spoken in my country? Most of us speak Swiss-German. Many speak French, and some speak Italian or an old language from Roman times. Look at a map of Europe and you’ll see why. Switzerland is surrounded by Germany, Austria, France and Italy. Below are some words you can try. Most of Switzerland is mountainous. The most famous mountain is the icy Matterhorn, very difficult to climb. A famous mountain path, the St. Bernard Pass, is known as the home of St. Bernard dogs, trained by monks to rescue people lost in the snow. The Swiss play alpenhorns in the mountains to call cattle home. Some alpenhorns are 15 ft. long. Switzerland has few natural resources and only a little farming, yet it is one of the richest countries in Europe. Some products are Swiss chocolate, cheese and watches. The capital is Bern. It has a famous tower-clock with performing figures. Our national flower is the Edelweiss. Wilhelm Tell is our national hero. He is said to have shot an apple from his son’s head. I know you’ll like my country. In the winter there is a lot of snow. And from spring ‘til late fall, the countryside is covered with all kinds of wild flowers.
