Mexican Barbie

(Back of the Box)

Buenos Dias (Good morning) from Mexico, your friendly neighbor to the south. My country has many different kinds of climates and scenery, from beautiful beaches to volcanoes, jungles and deserts. In Mexico you can visit temples and pyramids built long ago by the Indian civilizations of the Aztecs, Mayans, Toltecs and Olmecs. Indian arts and crafts such as weaving, painted masks, pottery and silverwork are still popular today. After Columbus discovered America, Spanish explorers came to Mexico and made it a colony of Spain. Everywhere you look you can see traces of the Spanish, including the language we speak! The white mantilla on my head is an example of the Spanish influence. Oranges, horses and guitars are others. The guitar has had a big effect on our music and dancing. We love fiestas (parties)! Cinco de Mayo (5th of May), Columbus day and Independence Day are just a few of our celebrations. There’s food, the music of strolling mariachi bands, dancing… and exciting fireworks, too! One of the special activities children look forward to at Christmas is the breaking of the pinata. A pinata is made of papier-mache and filled with candy, toys and other surprises. Each child is blind-folded and tries to break the pinata with a stick. Then everyone rushes for the treats! Our bread is made of corn and called a tortilla. It is flat and used to wrap fillings of meat, beans and chicken for tacos or enchiladas. We make a spicy sauce from chili peppers that adds a delicious flavor to our food. And we still like chocolate drinks just as the ancient Aztecs did. I hope you will come to Mexico soon to see for yourself the beauty and charm of our country and the warmth of the people. Until then, adios (goodbye)! Here are some Spanish words for you to learn for fun:

Casa: House, Gato: Cat, Nina: Girl, Abrazo: Hug, Amiga: Friend, Sonrisa: Smile
