Mexican Barbie

(Back of the Box)

Hello, I’m Mexican Barbie! Bienvenidos! Welcome to Mexico, the land of many colors, cultures and cuisines! When you walk through our pueblos (villages) you will see bright colors everywhere you turn! In the clothing the people wear; in the flowers on the windowsills and the decorated pots that hold them; in the baskets of delicious fruits and vegetables for sale in the open markets; and especially in the exquisitely painted murals that have inspired artists from all over the world! Mexico is colorful to see, to feel and to taste! Come to Mexico for fiestas (parties)! We love to celebrate with our families, old friends and new friends, too! We serve wonderful foods such as carne (meat), pollo (chicken) or queso (cheese) folded or rolled in tortillas (flat pancakes made of corn or flour) covered with mole (rich brown, chocolate sauce) made from a secret recipe usually handed down through the cook’s family. Most people think that Mexican food is always hot and spicy. It isn’t really, but nearly every dish is served with a side of chili sauce or peppers. Ay-yi-yi! Those are spicy! Other popular Mexican foods are frijoles (beans), frijoles refritos (refried beans), arroz (rice), and flan (custard dessert). You must try the liquados, (blended fruit drinks) with these delicious Mexican dishes! Pinatas (animal-shaped containers made of papier-mache) are popular at most Mexican celebrations. They are filled with little gifts and lots of candies! Children take turns being blindfolded then swinging a long stick to try and break it open. Have you ever had a pinata at your party? Escuchen! (Listen!) I think I hear music! Mexicans love music! We love classical symphony orchestras, popular rock and roll, and our singing cowboys called mortenos. But we are known all over the world for our strolling troubadours called mariachis. No matter where you are in the world, when you hear Mariachi music you can think of only one country: Mexico! The colors of the Mexican flag are green, white and red. Look! I am wearing an authentically styled fiesta dress in the colors of our national flag! Green stands for independence, white for religion and red for union! Come with me to our next fiesta and I’ll let you try to hit the pinata! Viva Mexico! Adios! (Goodbye!)
