Zdravstvuytye (Hello) from the Soviet Union. You may know my country as Russia, the largest country in the world! Russia is so big that it is home to many different people and cultures. Most people live in the western half of our big nation. It is here we have our capital, Moscow. This beautiful city is known for its graceful domes and spires, as well as for its famous ballerinas who dance with the Bolshoi Ballet. Russian people love all kindds of dancing, especially ballet and folk dancing. We also love sports, music, food, and our world-famous folk dolls called Matryoshka dolls. They are special because they “nest” one inside of the other. Some of our favorite foods are porridge, pancakes, pastries, salads, beetroot soup called borsch, and ICE CREAM! We eat lots of yummy dark bread called Russian Rye, and we like to stir spoonfuls of sweet jam in our tea. In the long, cold winter months we drink lots of Russian tea. And because our winters are long and our summers are short, our favorite sports are ice skating, cross country skiing, ice hockey and sledding. We also like to play soccer and chess! Two of our holidays are November Seventh and New Year’s Day. We celebrate Independence Day on November Seventh with parades and fireworks. On New Year’s Day we decorate trees and give presents! The beautiful pink dress and fur hat I’m wearing would be perfect to wear on Neew Year’s Day, especially to go for a ride in a troika (a special Russian snow sled drawn by three horses). There is so much more I could tell you about my country. Russian people are considerate, kind, and we love parties! Come and visit us soon and we will welcome you with a bouquet of flowers.
