Kwanzaa

December 26 through january 1 marks the wonderful weeklong holiday inspired by African harvest celebrations — Kwanzaa. The name is from the Swahili phrase matunda ya kwanza, which means “first fruits.” The African-American festival celebrates the culture, the community, and the family. Kwanzaa is a favorite holiday of one beautiful girl, because it is a time to celebrate with her family and friends. This is also a time for her to honor her ancestors and African history. She likes to take this time to promise to live up to the ideals of Kwanzaa, such as justice, truth, and respect for people, nature, and her elders. Kwanzaa is celebrated with drumming, dancing, singing, and other rituals, including lighting the mishumaa, the seven principles or Nguzo Saba. She loves these beautiful principles that she knows in both Swahili and English: umoja (unity); kujichagulla (self-determination); ujima (collective work and responsibility); ujamaa (cooperative economics); nia (purpose); kuumba (creativity); and imani (faith).
