The Bob Mackie face mold was the first mold designed specifically for dolls in the Collector Edition category. The name is derived from fashion designer Bob Mackie, who had collaborated with Mattel for the first time in 1990, creating Gold Barbie.
The Mackie sculpt was created in 1991, and was first used in 1992 for the Mackie Neptune Fantasy Barbie.
Since then, Bob Mackie has collaborated with Barbie numerous times. The mold is used outside of his collaborations, mostly for Collector Edition dolls, but occasionally for playline as well.
