Spanish Barbie
(Back of the Box)
Hola (Hello) from Espana (Spain), the land of sunny beaches and elaborate festivals. Spain is the second largest country in western Europe. We share borders with France and Portugal, and the southern tip of Spain points toward Morocco. The capital city of Spain is Madrid, located right in the center of our country. In the afternoon, hace mucho calor (it’s very hot) in Spain, so everyone gathers at home for la comida (lunch), the main meal of the day. My favorite dishes are: paella (rice with meat), tortilla de patatas (potato omelets), pan (read), and fruta (fresh fruit). After lunch, the children go back to school for afternoon classes, and the men and women return to work. As the sun begins to set, everyone heads outdoors to meet their friends at the plaza (town square) and enjoy the cooler temperature. Families take an evening paseo (walk) together, then have a late cena (supper), including sopa (soup), fruit and cheese. After supper, the teenagers get together with their friends at las discotecas (dance clubs). Spain has many festivals which vary from region to region. The streets are filled with colorful desfiles (parades) and Spanish dancers. We’re famous for our dances, like the sardana and the famous flamenco with lots of clapping and foot-stomping! Festival parades feature huge floats and statues depicting religious figures. I’m ready for a fiesta (party) in this traditional costume from Catalunya (Catalonia) in northeastern Spain. My pretty lace headpiece is called a mantilla (scarf). My apron, long golden earrings, and fringed shawl all represent the typical dress of the people of Catalunya from days long ago. We Spanish have always been proud of our beautiful horses. Our tradition of horsemanship is preserved in the Andalucian Riding School in Jerez where there are weekly public displays that are exciting to watch. We love to play futbol (soccer) and watch futbol matches on la tele (television). I hope you’ll come to Spain and see how warm and friendly we Spaniards are! Hasta pronto! (Come see me soon!)
Here are some Spanish words and phrases for you to learn for fun: Chica: Girl, Chico: Boy, Galleta: Cookie, Amigo: Friend, Que Chulo: How Pretty!, Merienda: Afternoon Snack, Vamanos: Let’s Go!, Super-Divertido: Super Fun!
