Norwegian Barbie
(Back of the Box)
Hello, I’m Norwegian Barbie. Come visit Norway, the land of the midnight sun! It’s hard to imagine, but in most of Norway, the sun shines day and night from May to July! Norway is a rugged country with lots of very tall mountains, beautiful forests and unusually long, narrow ocean waterways extending inland between the tall mountain peaks. These waterways are called fjords. Fjords are all along the beautiful coastal plains. Most of our people live in the southern regions, near the city of Oslo, the capital of Norway. We go shopping for flowers and vegetables at wonderful outdoor open markets called Stortorget. In the summer, we stroll along the harbor. In the winter, we love to go skiing with our family and friends! The people of Norway are called Nordmenn (Norwegians). They are usually tall, sturdy, fair-skinned, blonde and blue eyed. One of the most famous Norsemen, Leif Erikson, was the first to cross the Atlantic Ocean, non-stop, looking for new land. He and his men sailed a huge, hand-crafted Viking ship to the North American coast and called it Newfoundland. Perhaps you have heard of the folk tale, called “Billy Goats Gruff” about three goats who wanted to cross a bridge that hid a grumpy old troll (elf) underneath. Trolls are very famous in Norwegian folk tales. Although they are not usually bright, they are always mischievous to a fault! Do you know any stories about trolls? Most of the food we love comes from the ocean – we have over 15,000 miles of coastline! Some of our favorite fish dishes are herring, gravlaks (smoked salmon) and fiskekaker (codfish cakes). We also like to eat farrikaal (mutton and cabbage), lefse (potato pancakes) and other smorgasbord of delicious foods! Smorgasbord means lots of different kinds of foods – all ready to eat! I am wearing a Bunad, a popular Norwegian dress trimmed in lace with a traditional “silver” necklace and matching cap. I like to wear my Bunad to formal celebrations such as weddings, birthdays and especially on The National Day – May 17! It’s a Norwegian tradition to pass a Bunad on from generation to generation. One day my children and grandchildren will be as proud to wear it as I am! I hope you will come to Norway! I want to show you everything! Good bye!
