Princess of Holland

During the Dutch Golden Age in a palace garden in the city of Amsterdam, a pretty princess admires the tulips. These beautiful flowers were brought here from Turkey. When they first arrived, everyone wanted them so much that there was “tulipomania”; four tulip bulbs could cost as much as a merchant’s house! As she walks in her garden, the girl greets people from the court with “Alles goed?” (Is everything all right?). Her country is called Holland, which means “Woodland” in Diets, the Old Dutch language. Before that, Holland was called Frisia. This is a wonderful time to live in Holland because Dutch trade, science, and the arts are admired all around the world. There are beautiful Dutch paintings to see, but it is also a fun place to grow up. The princess thinks that her city is very beautiful. There are over 100 great canals. In the winter, it gets very cold nad the canals freeze. Everyone skates on iron skates called shaatsen. The princess loves to twirl and glide as if she were dancing on ice! Springtime is a favorite time for the princess, too, because it is Carnival time! A cannon fires and there is a grand procession. For three days and nights, the celebration continues with traveling artists, jugglers, acrobats, fire-eaters, tightrope walkers, and all sorts of entertainers! What a Dutch treat!
