In regal Russia, a lovely blonde girl with bright blue eyes lives in a magnificent palace. Her parents are the czar and czarina, or king and queen. The princess is called the Grand Duchess. Her family owns many palaces throughout their country and each one is filled with wonderful riches. But, most of all, the princess treasures her matryoshka. These are beautiful painted wooden nesting dolls that fit one inside the other. Russia is a wonderful place to live and there are many exciting things to do. Because the contry is very cold in the winter, the rivers freeze and the princess can ice skate on them. When the weather is warmer, she loves to go boating with her family. In June and July something amazing happens in parts of this vast country — Beliye Nochi or “White Nights.” That is when the sky never gets dark because the sun doesn’t go far enough under the horizon! All year round, there are festivals that the princess adores. She likes New Year’s because that is when Grandfather Frost and the Snow Maiden bring her gifts. There is a great New Year’s Eve dinner around a decorated fir tree. Today is another fete when the palace is decorated with plants and fresh flowers and will be opened to thousands of people. The princess is so happy to be here, wearing her favorite dress and her grandmother’s crown.
