More than 450 bird species live here and many exotic plants flourish, including the three national flowers—jasmine, the Moon Orchid, and Rafflesia Arnoldi, the world’s largest flower! The incredible undersea world reveals nurse sharks, seahorses, staghorn coral, and sea urchins. Green turtles make their homes here, while giant turtles visit at the beginning of every year! A wealth of Sumatran art is also abundant! Ulos, the traditional Batak cloth, and songket weaving, a cotton or silk cloth interwoven with silver and gold threads, are prized. Artisans create highly-collectible and intricate wood carvings. And highly regarded Sumatran coffee is considered to be among the most full-bodied Arabicas in the world.
