Festivals of the World
Diwali
For five days each year, the people of India celebrate a favorite festival marking the lunar New Year: Diwali, which means “rows of lighted lamps.” During this wonderful festival, houses are cleaned and beautifully decorated with colorful designs called rangoli; sweets and gifts are exchanged; and countless lamps — called diyas — glow foer this joyous “Festival of Lights.” One pretty girl is very excited because today is the fifteenth day of Kartika, which is the first day of Diwali! Many traditions mark the holiday and she looks forward to the agarbattis (incense sticks) and mithaal (sweets). She especially loves the third day of the festival because that evening there are firecrackers, rockets, and sparklers. Throughout all the celebration, though, the girl remembers that the lamps and candles symbolize hope and knowledge. With this celebration of the New Year, she tries to remove ignorance, anger, and hatered fro mher life. Designed by Katiana Jimenez, Diwali Barbie doll captures all the joy and beauty of India’s wonderful festival!
