Mego Corporation

Mego is an American toy company based in New York, established in 1954.

In 1971 the company shifted from producing dime store toys to licensed action figures, based on a large number of properties including DC, Star Trek, The Dukes of Hazzard and Laverne & Shirley. Their 8-inch scale figures would inspire a rise licensed action figure series and become the industry standard. They would later expand to fashion dolls with 1973’s Maddie Mod, followed by celebrity dolls starting with Sonny and Cher in 1976. That same year they would license Takara’s Microman figures in the US under the name Micronauts, while in 1978 they purchased the rights to the 2-XL toy robot, entering the electronic toy market.

Due to high debt and poor sales in their heavily-invested electronic toys, Mego would file for bankruptcy in 1982 and officially cease to exist in 1983. However, the company would be reformed in 2018 and begin producing figures based on classic properties such as DC and Star Trek once again.
