Princess of the Pacific Islands

(Back of the Box)

A beautiful girl with long black hair walks along the shore of the tropical paradise of Hawaii. She says “Aloha” to everyone she sees – This greeting means both hello and goodbye. Her father is called the ali’i nui, the most powerful ali’i (chief) or mo’i (king). The maka’ainana (common people) believed that the ali’i (nobility) were chosen by the gods. The princess loves surfing or he’e nalu, which means wave-sliding in old Hawaiian. Her board is called a kioe which is a small body board used by children. Her father rides an olo, a very long surfboard used only by royalty. The people of Hawaii have a reputation for being excellent surfers. Now it is autumn and time for Makahiki, a festival which celebrates the end of the harvest season. There are feasts and contests between villages. Hawaiian games are played, such as ulu maika (a lawn bowling game), konane (a game similar to checkers), and pa uma (wrestling matches). This is one of the princess’ favorite times of the year!
